Survivors’ Fixes and GenCon

Wednesday, August 4th, 2010

I just wanted to give a hearty “thanks!” to everyone who provided feedback on the Survivors’ Quest and helped get things fixed up. My list is Sir Cheddar, Cryptodynamic, Valliant, Argeth, Mag, Happy Yeti, ThunderBird, TeKRunner, and Plus4. Sorry if I missed anyone.

Timing’s pretty good. As the bug reports are starting to slow down a touch, I’m heading to GenCon. I’ll be keeping an eye on things from there, but mostly just enjoying my vacation, so try not to request too many sweeping changes :)

Cheers!

Survivors’ Quest Release!

Friday, July 30th, 2010

The Survivors’ Quest is officially out!

It should be available now for everyone who’s completed the Slags Quest. Just talk to Hel.

You may also have a bit of a present in the mail if you have been participating in the Beta Reset contest. There’s a new contest (oh yes) that I’ll let everyone figure out as they get there.

The High Road/Low Road from the Slags Quest has been revamped. It’s both a lot more interactive and probably a little harsher until it’s figured out. Also, there’s a new recipe from old components that might be of interest.

With the good news out of the way, I’d like to ask for three things:

  • Report bugs as you find them, because there will be bugs. Oh will there be bugs.
  • Forgive me in advance for being slammed and not fixing said bugs in a very timely manner.
  • Don’t worry too much about balance at first. Stuff will need to be tweaked, I’m sure, but we need to get all the fixing and discovering out of the way first.

Cheers!

Countdown to Doomsday

Saturday, July 24th, 2010

Tick tock.

The Survivors’ Quest is complete but still needs to go through internal (read: me) testing.

Barring something totally bizarre happening, the quest will go live exactly a week from now. So July 31st server time.

So why am I warning everyone in advance?
Well, because I said I’d warn everyone in advance. And because, well, it’s the Survivors’ Quest and some people might want to see it with a certain set of survivor(s) or otherwise get their affairs in order.

Will their be a July Unearthly Item?
No promises. I’d rather this go smoothly than get out the Unearthly Item.

Any other changes going in?
There are a couple changes that I’ll be making to the Slags quest, hopefully before the Survivors’ Quest goes in. After that, I’m sure I’ll be spending enough time on bug reports that I won’t think about new content for a bit.

What about the Beta Reset contest?
The rewards will be going out when the Survivors’ Quest rolls. The contest to go along with the survivors will be a different sort of contest, but that will grow and change over the next few months.

Tick tock?
Tick tock.

Twitter

Wednesday, July 7th, 2010

I’ve been considering creating a Metroplexity Twitter account or Facebook group for some time now. The network issues over the last few days have kind of pushed me off the fence.

I’m not aware of anyone experiencing serious problems, but it’s basically guaranteed we’ll have a true outage at some point. And I’d like to have a way to communicate that. Twitter seems like the appropriate venue.

The link is http://twitter.com/MetroplexDev.

I’ll be feeling out exactly how best to use it. At the very least I’ll try to mention outages, major updates (that people who don’t visit the site everyday might want to know about), and limited time content. As time goes on, I may also include minor updates and the occasional random thought, we shall see.

July’s Unearthly Item – Midgard Player

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

Zack now has June’s Unearthly Item, the Midgard Player. It’s a small thing, really, a tiny little music player with a lot of content backing it up.

There’s a lot to it. Go ahead and breathe it in. I hope you enjoy figuring it out as much as I enjoyed putting it together.

Cheers!

Extreme Fishing

Sunday, May 16th, 2010

So, a while back, a lot of folks were asking me about fishing updates. Lots of stuff like “Extreme Bass is too vicious” and “you can’t see your skill gains in any meaningful sense.” And I warned people that would require a complete rewrite of fishing and we just couldn’t justify putting it in.

Then I realized I could cheat it on to the schedule by combining it with this month’s donation item. Yeah, that’s right! Kinak (me), stickin’ it to The Man (also me) for your benefit!

So if your fishing (and chess by happenstance of using the same system) are working a bit differently from before… that’s because it’s totally different. I did carry over people’s ratings, although the labels have changed.

In completely related news, Zack has his unearthly-coin-loving hands on some equipment intended for the Extreme Bass XIII release party.

Cheers!

Metroplex University Student Disappears

Friday, May 7th, 2010

Late last night a well-known artist disappeared from his dorm room on Metroplex U’s main campus. After stirring up controversy with an art showing that resulted in structural damage to the University’s art museum, he’s continued to make waves by disappearing on several occasions.

His friends relate that this time is different, however. In the middle of the night, while working on his newest painting, they report he was snatched from his dorm room by men in dark suits.

Sergeant Blader with the campus detachment of Midgard Security Forces refused to comment. However, off the record, one of his guards told us not to expect any investigation on the “obvious publicity stunt.” Another suggested it’s only thanks to the guards’ work that “[he] hasn’t taken a bullet to the head yet.”

We asked Maxwell Newman, the undergrad who originally reported the disappearance, his opinion on the guards’ candid statements. He had the following to offer: “I can see why they’d think that. I mean, he’s wandered around a couple times, ending up on the Docks and so forth. But we’re going to give them until Sunday or Monday to realize this is the real deal before we look for outside help.”

Mr. Newman declined to clarify what outside help they might be after.

OmniMall 0.3

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

OmniTech is pleased to announce a special holiday update to OmniMall.

  • OmniMall is now able to handle gift transfers (whether goods or Credits) for a negligible fee. Not only can you do all your holiday shopping on OmniMall, now your recipients can pick them up without either of you leaving the comfort of your Net connection!
  • For those who are already members, OmniMall is now available anytime and anywhere through our new comm site.
  • When placing an order in OmniMall that matches existing orders, you will now be informed of this rather than immediately filling them.
  • A new expert system helper, Malla the Llama, was introduced to suggest how to fill existing orders.
  • When you send a gift to someone who has access to OmniMall, they will receive an automated message.
  • Malla the Llama was removed after three testers destroyed their comms and stormed out of the building.
  • “Lack of Malla the Llama” added to features list.

Thank you for shopping OmniTech.

Halloween Preparation

Saturday, October 24th, 2009

As anyone who’s organized a big party can tell you, it’s a lot of work. The poor bastards organizing the Metroplex U Halloween Bash this year are already starting up.

I’d sure they’d appreciate some help, although the whole “not being a student” thing might give you problems. But I have faith in you :)

Of course, there are other people with different ideas of how things should turn out. They might appreciate your help too, although they might not jump out and ask.

You probably guessed that your choices are going to matter, but there’s a bit of a catch: everyone’s choices effect the final outcome. That means different encounters and rewards for the party, even a few changes that extend further down the road.

Good luck and happy pre-Halloween!

Cheers!

Urban Legends, Vol. I

Thursday, October 15th, 2009

The october donation item is in. It’s just a little something, not a huge block of content, but it has a lot of neat stuff going on.

A few things that you’ll probably want to know before deciding whether you want to grab it:

  • It grants the first permanent (cross-reset) skill.
  • It’s a one coin donation item, which means it’s primarily self-contained and focused on uses rather than content. It also means its mysteries shouldn’t still be bugging people in four months.
  • Its mechanics are inspired by Kingdom of Loathing’s Librams, so a huge shout out is in order there :) Thanks!

Before anyone asks about other skills being made permanent: Not yet.

Cheers!
