Festive Updates

Wednesday, December 23rd, 2009

We have a festive batch of interface updates and bug fixes today… most of which seem to involve gang warfare… hmmm…

  • In possibly the most festive update, there is now a gift link in player’s profiles. Top notch suggestionf rom TekRunner.
  • Chat now includes a /channel command that will tell you about which channels you’re in and which you could be in. Good suggestion, Wyrd.
  • Also chat related, the long-standing request for doublepost prevention was taken care of. Thanks to Llamaman and The Kitchen Sink for getting this on the list a ways back.
  • In “shopping” encounters with old coins, your number of old coins in inventory should appear before the choices. Good suggestion, Steaming.
  • Corrected some database problems causing issues in PvP. Thanks for the bug reports Caradal, xKiv, and Pyren.
  • Changed the Dock’s name in Gang Warfare. If that sets anything on fire, be sure to tell me. Thanks for pointing that out, Vholes.
  • In another old request off the list, gang message and description changes are now displayed in the gang log in their own section. Thanks to The Kitchen Sink for that one.
  • Also corrected some very festive typos with help from Plus4, Mag, Vholes Piper, and Factitious.

Cheers!

Ho! Ho! Huh?

Tuesday, December 15th, 2009

On today’s special holiday episode of the devblog, we have:

  • We’ve added a personal touch to the Abominable Snowman leaderboard, revealing where you stand. Thanks for the suggestion, Man Mobile, and some bug finding from Mag.
  • Horned Snowmen will no longer use their ultimate “Turn your weapon into a Brain Staples Single” attack. Thanks for the suggestion, Mag and Deathknight.
  • Fixed up some icicle errors. Thanks for the bug report, Valera.
  • You now need to be in the Slags to give Hel her Christmas gift of a containment suit. Thanks for pointing this out Pyren and Vholes.
  • Larry’s extra-special gift is likewise better given in person. Good suggestion from a ways back, thanks to Mr. Green.
  • Thanks for some very festive typo fixes from Mag, Valera, Argeth, and Al.
  • Also, the Flying Eyes got an early Christmas present from yours truly.

Cheers!

Thanksgiving Updates

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Dropped in a few minor updates over Thanksgiving.

  • There are now descriptions of the stats, available by clicking on their names in the left pane. Good suggestion, Steaming.
  • There are descriptions in the quest log for the connections between steps in the main quest, in case you need a little nudge. I forgot to list this one a few updates ago. Thanks, Plus4!
  • Killing the poet now properly removes the quest for his friend out of the quest log. Thanks again, Steaming!
  • And we have an impressive crop of typo fixes including help from Mag, Borkman, Wyrd, Pyren, Cryptodynamic, Sir Cheddar, and Vholes Piper.

Updates

Thursday, November 5th, 2009

A few updates to record during and after the Halloween madness.

  • Gang logs will now “stack” identical messages if they follow immediately after each other. Good suggestion, Mr. Green.
  • There’s now more feedback after taking care of the Fang’s boss that there’s a bit of work left to do. Thanks, Al!
  • Hitting enter in Firefox/Safari when changing the preferences for pane layout won’t change your avatar anymore. Good catch, Mr. Green!
  • Leaving a channel in chat won’t change which channel you’re speaking into (unless you left that one). Thanks Wyrd!
  • Areas displayed in profiles are now more precise. If anyone can remind me why I didn’t do this before, though, I might change it back :) Otherwise, thanks Al!
  • Tearing silly amounts of items now gives appropriate errors. Thanks, Mr. Green.
  • Also corrected a whole slew of typos thanks to Borkman, PaidPiedPiperPal, Argeth, Pyren, Mag, Artie Effham, and Edwahd

Cheers!

More Updates

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

Alrighty, have some changes in today.

  • There’s a new ‘Medicine’ category in inventory for those items that where part of the healing retool. There are a few stray equippable items that use the same mechanic (such as the first aid kit), but these are most of them.
  • Stunning Techniques have been reworked so they behave consistently. The short version is that all stuns start on the next set of combat actions. Previously, they were all over the place (with most affecting active players and opponents differently). Thanks to Pyren for kicking off this train of thought.
  • When you select an outfit from the dropdown, it should automatically populate that name in the text field, making it easier to modify and delete outfits. Good suggestion, Rykar!
  • Fixed a bug that was causing onsite hacking to cost Energy twice. Thanks Llamaman!
  • Mikhail now has an appropriate response if you rescue Hel after letting everyone else die. Thanks for testing the corner cases, Factitious!
  • And some typo fixes from Mag and Slyspawn. Thanks!

In an unrelated note, there will be a few items being marked as craftable in the near future that won’t necessarily have recipes with the items you have available. I’d prefer to have a few extra marked now than risk forgetting to mark them properly later.

Cheers!

XP Distribution

Wednesday, September 16th, 2009

Added another way that choices matter, which is always awesome, and sorted out a little weirdness today.

  • Experience gained in combat is now weighted based on your Techniques used. You should still get some experience towards all four, just more towards the ones you’re actively using. Thank you, Al, for reminding me about this.
  • Special messages from the unearthly coin shouldn’t fall under the “Continue On” options anymore. Thanks, Pyren!
  • The experimental coat will no longer count the buffs it just removed towards the new buff it hands out. Good catch, Cryptodynamic!
  • Corrected the fused sword description to actually describe the fused sword. :) Thanks Mag!
  • Fixed a serious Metros breakdown. Thanks for the bug report, RazielSonofKain.

Cheers!

Updates! We got updates!

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Been working on the Survivors’ Quest and this month’s donation item, but have slipped in a few fixes.

  • Buffed Password Guesser so it can now take down multiple opponents. Good suggestion, Rykar.
  • Fixed a bug with that was giving Red Alert on random hacking sites. Thanks to Mag, Argeth, and Llamaman for helping me squash this one.
  • Overkilling an enemy in hacking will now show them as “dead” appropriately. Thanks Rykar!
  • Petrol Splash should now be working as intended. I promise :) Thanks to Pyren for and everyone else who’s helped with this one.
  • Added some new tidbits of information to the MBR Lab. Good idea, Argeth!
  • Also fixed up some typos from Mag, Man Mobile, dfmchfhf, Artie Effham,PaidPiedPiperPal, Pyren, and Fr00d! Thanks, everybody :)

Cheers!

Putting More “War” in Gang Warfare

Friday, June 12th, 2009

Put in a fairly significant Gang Warfare update today, which I’ll try to explain below. Short version is that defending in Gang Warfare now involves actual fighting and less staring at non-combats.

How It Worked
Once you beat down the previous defenders in an area, you’d gain control through non-combats (which prepare fights for future challengers). Then, after a while, it stops queueing fights and you just get the delicious, delicious benefits.

The Change
Now, when someone is challenging control of your area by defeating your defenders, you need to actually beat them back down instead of just having another non-combat to repair the damage. Assuming you’re successful, you repair the damage just like the old non-combat would.

These new sort of queued fights also can transition over into Control when you take out the old controllers, so you might be able to skip the “gaining control” non-combats entirely.

Why
So defenders in Gang Warfare get to actually fight people rather than hitting a bunch of non-combats. And so that there’s a little more symmetry between attacking and defending. Previously, there was nothing an attacker could do that the defenders couldn’t undo with a non-combat, where now, both sides win or lose in actual PvP.

Other updates for today:

  • There were some SQL connection errors which have apparently been resolved by our hosts, but if you run into any more of those, give me a holler. Thanks to Thrillhouse and JTN2002 for reporting these.
  • Resolved the PHP errors related to last night’s account preferences rollout. Thanks to Borkman, Lord Finisher, and Hastur the Unspeakable for isolating these.
  • Recipes that you cannot complete due to missing components will now have their radio buttons greyed out. Good suggestion, Al and xKiv!
  • And also thanks to Jick and Pyren for taking care of some typos for us.

Cheers!

Today’s Updates

Friday, May 22nd, 2009

Also had a bunch of updates. Just want to get them posted before the list swallows my soul.

  • Your own name should be bold in the gang log, although this might be applied a bit inconsistently to old entries. If it’s still missing anywhere in 24 hours, be sure to tell me. Thanks to The Kitchen Sink for the suggestion.
  • The equipment titles in your inventory (where it says ‘Hat:’ then has your hat, the ‘Hat:’) now link down to the appropriate sections. Also, the section titles link back up to the top of the inventory. Thanks to Valliant for the suggestion.
  • For all you Gang Leaders out there, the Gang’s current description should now populate in the field you use to change it, making minor changes easier. Good suggestion Olaf!
  • The Arms Dealer’s personal stash now shouldn’t duplicate items you brought in from another reset or give you his favorite book if you’ve already read it. He’s awesome like that. Thanks to PaidPiedPiperPal for bringing this up.
  • As much as I love time capsules, you now can’t send mail to player ids that don’t exist yet. Good catch, Mr. Green.
  • The links in the header pane should load in the correct frame in Firefox 3. Thanks for the bug report, Lambchop.
  • On a related note, I think we got login working with Javascript enabled on the new Firefox build. No promises, though. Thanks to xKiv for bringing this up.
  • The constrict attack that Masses of Tentacles use is now a melee attack, so Shotgun Blast away. Unlike Valliant, I would never have noticed that. Thank you.
  • Added a bunch of form validation that wasn’t there before. Big thank you to Olaf for poking around.
  • Enemies now heal to full overnight just like you. Thanks to The 3 for making “three day marathon” not the optimal combat type.
  • Also a hearty round of applause to The Kitchen Sink, Pyren, Mag, and CanadaMan for reporting typos. Hip hip huzzah!

Cheers!

Gang Warfare Revamp

Sunday, May 17th, 2009

The big Gang Warfare revamp went in today. Lots of neat stuff, let’s see what I can remember off the top of my head.

  • There’s a Hideout link in the top pane now, where appropriate. Among other things, several new gang enhancements are manually used from that screen.
  • There are new gang enhancements. Two will pop out right away, with others (five more) unlockable through various means.
  • There are a bunch of new Techniques. Not all of these will stay Gang-only, but there are a whole slew of them, including some popular demand ones and some that think are awesome.
  • Vigilante has grown into what I was originally picturing. There are some more options now that I’m pretty excited about.
  • There are new crafting components for every craft. I didn’t really plan it that way, but there are a lot of crafting components.
  • An entirely new type of consumable has hit the streets, courtesy of the Third Eye. These won’t stay gang-only forever, but I think they’re pretty interesting either way.
  • There’s a bit of a side quest, although the eventual reward isn’t a Skill.
  • There’s also a new Skill, giving a new option to an old side quest, but it’s so hidden it’s almost an Easter Egg.
  • There’s now another market for your old coins, if you’re so inclined.
  • The game now tracks lifetime gang warfare records. They’re displayed in parentheses behind the current number where appropriate. Thanks to Pyren for the suggestion.
  • Medicine Cabinets indicate when they’ve been raided in both the Gang and Hideout screens. Thanks for the suggestion Magnifico.
  • You should receive additional feedback when your Gang Warfare attempts move your gang to Total Control or Iron Grip. Good suggestion, The Kitchen Sink!
  • Thanks to Man Mobile and Justin for reporting issues I caused while getting the code ready for these upgrades.

I’m probably missing stuff, honestly. There’s a whole lot going on. There’s even a new paper mache ‘recipe’ for crying out loud. It’s like a madhouse in there.

With an upgrade like this, especially in the PvP system, I expect for some problems to slip through. So please keep your bug reporting ready to go.

Cheers!
